Portaging (verb) - The art (and pain in the art)
of transporting gear and canoes over land.

We traveled by two aluminum canoes ~80 lbs each (above),
a yellow Kevlar canoe ~45 lbs (below left) and a red fiberglass canoe ~60 lbs (below right).

While four people carried canoes, the other four carried backpacks and paddles.
Most backpacks weighed 40 - 50 lbs.

At right: Mindy rocked the first
day carrying our food. That bag
was heavy and uncomfortable!

Our longest portages were ~100 rods. One rod is a canoe length.
Some portages were as short as 15 rods.
In normal speak, our longest portage was roughly 1/4 mile.

Some joys were found during portages: large patches of wild blueberries!

Blueberries make paddlers & portagers strong!

Watch Jenypher rock that 80 lb canoe!
